I usually put my numbers under the title of rides that I'm leading. Then I edit that post after the ride to remove my numbers from the public domain.

Or run a knackered old front mech to simply guide the chain. Use a short length of cable wrapped and tied around the mech to hold it in the right place!

My commuting bike just has a 44T chainring with a seven speed block on the back. So no need for a front mech there

The chain does slip off occasionally, usually when I mis-shift or hit a big bump.

Oh sod it. It is like dominoes. I have sorted the groups out as per mentioned earlier. One thing led to another (sounds a bit like 'Dear Deirdre').

You should only see four forums. ALL of the publicly visible messages have been merged into the right places.

I now await a forum thread called 'Have we got too few forum categories?'

As a start I have consolidated all the announcements that are important into two messages in the Rides forum. One is for all the stuff like insurance forms etc., making sure the internal link works(!) and the other is a way of getting around the thorny issue of telephone numbers. Those who don't mind about adding their names/numbers can, those who don't can be contacted through other members.

Next I may consolidate Rides/Unofficial Rides into just 'Rides', rename this group to 'Chat' while merging in 'Kit', 'Miscellaneous', get rid of the Club Business area totally, eventually leaving us with:

Rides
Chat
For Sale
Moderators

All other mails will be merged into the right place.

In order to tidy up the forums (fora?) Here is a thread for all the important stuff to live in. It may get a bit rambling but it should contain all the info you require. If not, ask below and we'll attempt to sort it out.

Please feel free to reply and add more if need be, or ask Adam to update as necessary.

1. INSURANCE FORMS

Can all ride leaders please complete a ride registration form, before each club ride starts. The ride leader should carry this during the ride so we know who is riding with us and hand or post it to the Club Secretary at the end of the ride. These are filed and kept and in the event of an insurance claim may be referred to. It may invalidate our insurance cover if the forms are not completed and retained for each ride.

2. GENERAL RIDE INFO

Please remember: no helmet, no ride! If you turn up without a helmet or refuse to wear one then you will not be welcome to join the ride.
Phone the ride leader if you are coming on a ride. This gives him/her chance to tailor the ride if the numbers are high. They will then give you information regarding the start point.
Please be on time. If a ride states it will start at 10:00am then riders will be setting off without you!

3. CONTACTING RIDE LEADERS

Club Members

Contact details are on the printed sheets sent to you by Andrew. They are duplicated for easy access in a hidden forum called 'Club Business->Announcements' on this site. Please contact me (email, private message, carrier pigeon etc.) with your real name and nickname on this site and I'll arrange transparent access.

New to NATS, would like to come along

If you have yet to join or would like to meet up please email natsmtb@yahoo.co.uk to chat to Andrew who can arrange stuff for you. If you don't get a response then contact me at natsmtbweb@idnet.com or a private message to 'adamski' here and I should get back to you shortly. Please note that our insurance only allows five non-members per ride (normally we're under that number) and you must be wearing a helmet to join us.

I'll include your nicknames within the rides list shortly so people can PM you as a last/first(!) resort. If you are happy to place your contact details in the topic please do so. Please don't post other people's telephone numbers without their permission.

Yes it works now.

I agree that the posted rides list should give the starting point. If people fail to phone ahead and then turn up late or in the wrong place then they'll miss the ride.

But that isn't something that Adam can sort out!

I once knew somebody who built a wooden car,

It had a wooden chassis, a wooden steering wheel, wooden dash and a wooden interior.

Also, it had wooden wheels and a wooden engine.

I found a bug. Everyone who paid up should be in the group 'clubmembers' which gives access to some special areas. It is failing on odd people but I get access as I am admin. Simon - you can now see the areas; the link will work (as long as you're logged in).

I suggest we follow the structure as shown in the discussion above.

1. Rides (all types)
2. Chat
3. For sale

At the top of each forum I'll put a single 'sticky' with info in (so as not to clutter the forum with them) and anyone can ask questions as they need. We're usually around to help

For the meetings I'll let you lot thrash out if you want to put meet location into the forum entry or PM it out to those who want to know (does force people to call you though!). For contacts we put a sticky up which says 'Contact X/Y/Z' for any contact info (in case someone is on holiday).

This then simplifies things enormously.

What do you think?

I think not having the start info on the rides list is bad, as it complicates things, Cut Gate was a prime example.

But equally should CutGate have been cancelled then nobody would have turned up by accident.

The rides list has all the phone numbers on it, and any emails regarding rides should be sent to me, then I can forward them to the leader, who will get in touch with you.

Personally, I don't mind having the start locations of my rides on the lists.

I've always thought that it would be good to circulate the rides list (with contacts) electronically, but I like my paper copy of that too. Could that whole document be made visible online, either from the forum or club homepage? Obviously that would be for paid-up members only!

As for contacts - if we simplify to 'rides', 'chat', 'for sale' there is no private area for me to put them. People will have to ask for a PM with the info in.

I can't make the contacts any more clearer - if you look at the mo you see 'Information' in the club business area with the following title:

Can we make the rides contacts list easier to find within the private area please. It always takes me ages to find it to book onto a ride

Oh and whilst Im thinking how about a for sale section otherwise I like Simons keep it simple approach

Ones I think are important if we pare it to the bone:

Rides (for ALL rides)
Misc (A catch-all for anything else)
Kit (Ask about kit, doing stuff etc.)

(separated)
Club talk - for paid up club members (could include contact info which I don't want to be in the 'open' forums)

BUT

I'm the web person. Tell me what you want/don't want and I'll modify the system to how you want it! Obviously anything can be changed as required.

Feedback please and I'll modify as requested!
